Take a good long look at this picture of Donald Trump. There is absolutely nothing that looks presidential, respectful, honorable, considerate, or honestly, even helpful. I’ll admit it’s not a flattering picture by any measure, and we shouldn’t be in the habit of judging people simply by how they look. At the same time, I think this picture captures the essence of what we’ve been seeing in this campaign from this man….just look again, pretend you can read lips and answer this question: What do you imagine he’s about to say? Exactly. And yet, he is currently the most likely candidate to be the Republican nominee for President of the United States.
There’s a long list of people who have endorsed him (and apparently his potty mouth, and vague positions), including people who would consider themselves “conservative” like Sarah Palin, or Willie Robertson (of Duck Dynasty), or Jerry Falwell Jr (President of Liberty University). There are others like Ann Coulter, Michael Savage, Sheriff Joe Arpaio and Phyllis Schafly. Add to that list, a parade of less-than-role-model athletes like Hulk Hogan (racist with a sex tape), Dennis Rodman (violent supporter of Kim Jong Ill who married himself), Latrell Sprewell (choked his coach and threatened to kill him), and Mike Tyson (convicted rapist and ear biter) and you have to wonder what in the world is going on here?
What are conservatives thinking is one thing, but what I really don’t understand is what are people who would self-identify as evangelical, Bible-believing, followers of Jesus doing supporting a man like Donald Trump? Look, I don’t expect believers to agree on everything, but I certainly think it’s realistic to expect them to do more than blindly accept anything and everything a man like Trump throws their way. Seriously people….THINK!
Does it matter that Donal Trump is untrustworthy and unprincipled? Is that really the kind of leader people are not just OK with but cheering for?
He doesn’t need to repent or ask forgiveness because he hasn’t made any mistakes? That alone should give any believer pause. Most wouldn’t want to frequent a restaurant where the servers dealt with patrons that way, let alone work for a boss that had that level of foolish arrogance, but apparently he’d be a great fit for the Boss of America?
After being “pro-choice in every respect” in 1999 (including up to the moment of birth). He now says he’s “evolved” and considers himself pro-life. That’s great right? Or so it would seem. Apparently his reason for evolving was quite personal. He described it during a Republican debate in August and said: “what happened is friends of mine years ago were going to have a child, and it was going to be aborted. And it wasn’t aborted. And that child today is a total superstar, a great, great child. And I saw that. And I saw other instances. And I am very, very proud to say that I am pro-life.” Awww, how sweet right? Wrong. Because when asked if he’d change his view on abortion if the child were “a loser” his response was less than principled – “I’ve never thought of it. That’s an interesting question. I’ve never thought of it. Probably not, but I’ve never thought of it. I would say no, but in this case it was an easy one because he’s such an outstanding person.”
I could go on with examples but what I’d like are explanations – explanations from people who support Donald Trump and more specifically, explanations from people who identify as evangelical and see no problem or conflict with supporting someone like Donald Trump. Please. Somebody. Tell me, what are they thinking!?
